Search engine optimisation or SEO, is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a website from search engines. The aim of SEO for webmasters and online business owners is to get their websites to rank highly on search engine results pages for keyword phrases that are both heavily searched for and related to their industry or niche. Three of the most common types of SEO work carried out are keyword optimization, link-building and increasingly article writing (coupled with a link building strategy with the aim of increasing the number of incoming links to a website or specific page within a website.

There are many tactics that get mentioned when talking about SEO, some good and some not so good. The good SEO tactics, which may result in a higher rank for each of your site’s web pages, are what you should be paying attention to. If you try to quick-fix your sites optimisation using bad SEO tactics there is a high chance you will be penalised by the search engines.

Here are a few SEO tips to keep in mind when thinking about keyword optimisation in website design:

1. Keywords: Use keyword suggestion tools to research keyword phrases related to the website. This helps to develop and target your keyword terms to match what your customers are searching for.  Don’t focus exclusively on general one word keywords or keyword phrases that would be very difficult to earn a high search engine placement for. Include your main keyword phrases throughout the pages on your website not just on your index page; make sure you pay particular weight to developing keyword rich titles and sub-headings.

2. Article exchanges: Article exchanges are a great way to create links to your website. You obviously know the ins and outs of your industry so why not try writing some relevant articles related to your industry. These articles serve a few purposes, they show your customers that you know what you are talking about, they create interest in your website and most importantly they send relevant one way links back to your website increasing your page rank.

3. Titles for links: This tactic is very often overlooked. For those who don’t know, all links can have a title, specified by the title attribute of the tag. The TITLE attribute is a way to add explanations, captions, and keywords to elements on your Web page. Use it to help clarify forms, add tool hints, or to increase site usability for visitors with disabilities. Some search engines figure this into their relevancy for an anchor text link within a web page.

4. Linking strategy: Building a solid incoming or inbound linking strategy into a website design or maintenance project is an important part of your websites SEO strategy. A link building strategy is increasing seen as the single most important factor for improving your websites search engine rankings. The reason for this is because search engines look at incoming links almost like a vote for your website. By this I mean when a website, preferably a high ranking or ‘authority’ website links to your site the search engine realises that your site has some relevance and gives a vote in your favor, adding to page rank.

Here are a few link-building tips to keep in mind, to build higher quality incoming links:

1. Try to achieve incoming/inbound links that are one-way, rather than reciprocal. A one-way link has more value.

2. Build incoming links from relevant websites of a similar industry, again adding more relevancy to the content within your web site Also it is only ever worth generating incoming links from “authority websites” , these being high quality and popular websites, generally web sites with a page rank of four or more, whenever possible.

3. If you are aiming to get internal pages within your site to rank better then try to get inbound links linking directly to that page. This can be done by producing articles specifically about the content on the desired page and linking back to it from the article.
